Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), A Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of Defence Production is a modern, integrated metallurgical facility set up with a view to achieve Self-Reliance in manufacture of a wide variety of Exotic Special Metals and Alloys to cater to the critical applications in strategic sectors like Aeronautics, Defence, Space, Nuclear Power and others. In respect of Aeronautics, about 50 alloys in various mill forms have been developed indigenously and type tested at Aeronautical Materials Department,Midhani. Sofar 37 type approval certificates have been issued to Midhani by Centre For Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC) The various activities involved while developing these alloys right from selection of raw material from qualified sources to melting, forging, hot rolling, cold rolling, quality control & assurance and evaluation etc were carried out in association with CEMILAC and Directororate General Of Airworthiness and Quality Assurance (DGAQA), the Airworthiness agencies of India, during the last two decades
In continuation of our indigenisation efforts, we have developed four (4) more alloys which have been type tested and approved and the details are as given below:
a). Titan 26A : A creep resistant Titanium Alloy comparable to the western grade IMI 685. This material is used where temperature goes upto 520 °C .
b) ZS6Y-VI : It is a Nickel based cast Superalloy which has good adaptability to manufacture cast components of various complex shapes and configuration and hance used as Investment cast turbine blades.
c) Superni 718A : This is a Nickel-Iron based Superalloy developed mainly for making rotating and static components of aero engines for use upto 650 °C. By-pass-duct, Jet pipes, frames are some of the typical components made from our Cold rolled sheets of this alloy.
d) E16NCD13 Alloy Steel: This Special purpose alloy steel possesses high hardenability and high mechanical properties which are primary design requirements for manufacturing spiral and spur gears as rotating components for transmission of power in aero-engine. |

FULFILLING THE SPECIAL MATERIALS REQUIREMENTS OF THE COUNTRY
The vision of founders of MIDHANI like Dr. RV. Tamhankar and other distinguished Scientists is being fulfilled by MIDHANI by developing and producing exotic special metals and alloys to meet the critical material requirements of aeronautics besides Defence, Space, Nuclear and others said Dr. Dipankar Banerjee, Distinguished Scientist, Chief Controller R&D (AMS), DRDO while handing over the “Type Approval Certificates” of four special aeronautical alloys on behalf of Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) to Shri. M Narayana Rao, Chairman & Managing Director, Midhani at a function held at Midhani today. While CEMILAC and DGAQA set the procedures, standards, quality aspects it is the development and production of the alloys that ultimately matters and MIDHANI has transformed into a mature production unit with forty one such approvals in its basket and exhibiting its capability in manufacture of strategic materials like Maraging steel, masteralloys etc for National programmes. Midhani has to now meet the challenges and demands of the growing Aeronautics sector in the country , he said.
Shri. M Narayana Rao, Chairman & Managing Director in his address disclosed the development of futuristic alloys such as Supercast material for Kaveri engine programme, modernization and Upgradation of our plant with focus on Quality , Quantity and timely deliveries and supply of our products in near net shapes in addition to mill forms.
Shri K Tamilmani, Outstanding Scientist, Chief Executive (A), Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) opined that Midhani would certainly play a key role in the development of aeronautic grades of alloys for the multiple aircraft programme including Sukhoi 30, ALH, LCH etc having demonstrated their capability with 41 approvals so far.
Shri. Pulak Sengupta, Director General, Directorate General Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA) expressed his happiness at the spirit of indigenisation and achieving Self-Reliance in the manufacture of these strategic materials. He emphasized the importance of Standards, procedures and attention to details to ensure the safety of the flight.
Shri VK Verma, Regional Director, RCMA (Materials) gave a brief introduction to the Four alloys namely Titan 26A; ZS6Y-VI; Superni 718A and E16NCD13 Alloy Steel, their specifications, properties, applications and how the four alloys have performed well beyond the set quality assurance parameters.
Earlier, Shri K Ramesh, Director (Production & Marketing) spoke on the development, production and processing of these four alloys at Midhani facilities.
