MIDHANI, set up in 1973, is engaged in production of super alloys, titanium alloys and special purpose steels and other special metals and alloys required for strategic sectors such as Aeronautics, Aerospace, Space, Armaments and Atomic Energy.
Modified 9Cr1Mo has been developed with the objective of extending the operating range of creep resistant ferritic steels to temperature upto 6000C and higher encountered in steam generator. These steels have favourable physical properties such as higher thermal conductivity and lower co-efficient of thermal expansion coupled with higher resistance to thermal shock. Modified 9Cr1 Mo plays an important role in the PFBR and is very difficult to manufacture. It is the material chosen for the construction of the PFBR steam generator.
Material specification and acceptance criteria are extremely stringent and the products have to undergo a detailed testing and characterization prior to their use. MIDHANI took up the challenging project of developing and supplying various finished components in this alloy for the PFBR for nuclear power generation.
This Project is of national Importance and is being taken up in the country for the first time. The team members have knitted with the manufacturing department and have come out with many innovative ideas that have been put into practice. Their efforts have presently placed MIDHANI, in the forefront in the development and production of frontier materials and components for nuclear reactors that the under embargo. The team comprising Shri M.V. Raghavaiah (GM), Shri D.N. Bhatia (GM), Shri Y.V.H. Rao (DGM), Shri S.N. Prasad (Senior Manager), Shri K. Ramakrishnan (Senior Manager), Shri D. Achutaram (DGM) and Shri K.R. Acharya (DGM) of MIDHANI has been conferred the award the "Innovation" in the Group/Individual Award Category forthe year 2006-07.
